At the recent annual budget meeting for Warwick District Council, the Labour group once again proposed allocating money specifically to build new Council Housing next year. This was rejected by the Conservative administration.

Cllr Colin Quinney pointed out “This Council has built no houses or flats for social rent this century! The government’s Right to Buy scheme is slowly eroding our housing stock. Our Council is sitting on £36M in reserves allocated for housing and is not spending where it is needed to meet local needs.”

“It’s scandalous that we have over 2400 on our housing waiting list, huge hidden problems of homelessness and affordablity for the most vulnerable in this District – and the Administration does nothing.”

For the last few years, Councillors have been told that investments will take place when opportunities arose or plans could be developed.

Cllr Kristie Naimo added: “What better opportunity than building on their own Council land – at Riverside House and Covent Garden.However it seems the administration have squandered this opportunity by allowing the planning application to go ahead with zero affordable, let alone social housing.”
