Cllr Colin Quinney, who leads for the District Labour Group on the plans, said:
“This news is unsurprising given the constant delays to the project and growing concerns about its impact on the economy, environment, housing mix and other services. While it is encouraging that even some Conservative Councillors are at last getting uneasy, only Labour has challenged the overall scheme from the start. We all know the project is flawed. Valuable public assets are being disposed of for little community benefit. There is widespread public concern. Over 8000 people have signed a petition opposing it and many businesses have expressed their concerns.”
He added “The Labour Group urged the Conservative Administration 18 months ago, to take a long look at the project and consider alternative options, including the detailed and costed suggestions put forward by Labour – but without effect”.
Labour Group Leader Cllr Kristie Naimo said “Now is the time for a new approach – a new way of looking at this project and a more collaborative style of Leadership – which Labour is offering. One that genuinely listens to the community and takes on board their views. In the interest of openness and transparency, Labour believes that a review of the project is needed and alternative options now need to be investigated with proper public scrutiny.“
