The local Labour Party said they would declare a Climate Emergency and a Climate Emergency has been declared today!

The Labour Group were the only party during the recent elections to promise to declare a Climate Emergency and a motion was submitted on 8th May 2019. They have fulfilled the promise to tackle and mitigate the effects of climate change in the District. This evening the Labour group showed their immense commitment to this crucial issue and through cross party co-operation our motion was passed tonight and subsequently Warwick District Council has declared a Climate Emergency with practical steps to consult widely on an action plan to bring forward policies and proposals to counter the hugely damaging effects on the environment, our health and our way of life!

During the meeting, Labour Group Leader Councillor Geraldine Cullinan said,

“As part of our manifesto we promised residents that as Labour has already done nationally, we would declare a Climate Emergency and work cross party and with others to make Warwick District a sustainable, carbon neutral environment. ‘Making our environment healthier’ is a priority and working collaboratively as a group with the commitment from other parties to join our mission, is something we welcome.”

Also during the meeting, Labour Councillor Jerry Weber said

“I am delighted that cross party negotiations achieved this declaration of a Climate Emergency which is very welcomed. I recommend the involvement of many stakeholders to inform the debate including, County & Town Council, local businesses, supermarkets, Stagecoach, Chiltern as well as the inclusion of a youth forum.”

After the meeting Deputy Labour Group Leader Councillor Jonathan Nicholls said,

“In the spirit of working cross party and open communications, it’s imperative that we all work together to tackle this pressing issue and do our very best to take immediate steps to make the environment healthier for the residents of Warwick District. It is great that Warwick District Council is the first Council to be invited to take part in the internationally recognised scheme UN Programme One Carbon World to help this Council to achieve carbon neutral status.”

The Labour group is proud to have played the leading role in the declaration of Warwick District Council’s Climate Emergency and they are delighted that the Council has taken this step in the right direction. The group is looking forward to working with residents, businesses, other councils and many stakeholders to bring forward positive actions to halt the ticking time bomb and crisis of climate change.
