Helen’s Update

This has been a difficult time for our community, and I hope everyone is safe, well and coping with lockdown. Whilst we have been in lockdown, I have been working with officers at Warwickshire County Council, liaising on issues such a social care, schools as well as the re-opening of recycling centres. I have also been working with Mutual Aid Leamington to support people in need. (Please see below for contact details for Mutual Aid Leamington).

Clean Air for Leamington, of which I am a member of the steering group, has been very active trying to capitalise on the  improvements to air quality in Leamington which have come as a result of the decrease in car usage. The changes to the town centre layout will hopefully maintain low emission rates but ensure safe social distancing, whilst enabling people to return to support the local economy. I have also been busy making sure that plans are in place, after lockdown is eased further, to begin the traffic calming measures on the Willes road, which will include speed bumps and a re-development of the crossing to make it safer for residents, in particular children.

Please do contact me in relation to COVID-19, as well as any other issues you may have that I can help with.

Mini’s Update

I hope this newsletter finds you safe and well. As well as coping with the COVID outbreak, you will be aware, that sadly we have had some worrying incidents in our community, specifically the fatal stabbing on Leam Terrace. During this period, I have been liaising with the Police and WDC regarding measures we can further implement to secure the safety of residents. I am now lobbying for CCTV camera’s in South Leam as well as one at Sydenham shops.

Myself and Helen are also aware that there are still issues in relation to speeding in Sydenham, specifically along Chesterton Gardens and St Fremund Way. There is still concern in relation to speeding on Gainsborough Drive, however, most residents are pleased with the buildouts, which have slowed traffic. We are talking to Officers at WCC about further measures.

I am pleased to see that the Fallow Hill Community room is nearly complete. I will let you know when WDC will allow the community to use it.

We can and want to help you, so please do contact us. We would like to emphasise how important it is to follow government guidelines.

Stop East Whitnash Campaign

During lockdown the application from AC Lloyd to build over 200 houses in East Whitnash was submitted to Warwick District Council. We have strongly objected to this via the WDC application portal and are lobbying county highways to also object. Our grounds for objection focus on the use of St Fremund Way as the main access road for the build. This will be intolerable for residents since it will result in increased noise and air pollution as well as general congestion. Please contact us if you would like to sign our petition to stop the East Whitnash development.

Black Lives Matter

It is impossible not to be horrified by the brutal murder of George Floyd. This tragic event has been a catalyst for word-wide reflection, re-education, and a time to stand in unity against racism and inequality in all its forms. We support the Black Lives Matter movement and we stand alongside our Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities and we are committed to the movement to end racism.

Town alleyways in South Leamington

Sadly, during lockdown drug activity has increased. We know this has been particularly prevalent in both Sydenham and South Leam. We are working with WDC Officers to try to develop different ways of stopping drug dealers meeting and dealing. Plans we are considering include gates to block back alleys. Please do contact us to let us know your experiences and views on how we can help.

Labour Group Surgery

We will let you know when we will be running face-to-face surgeries again. We anticipate this will be towards the end of the summer. In the meantime, please contact us at:
